Words, words, words / 01

So today I want to feature a hand-lettering project I just finished last night for my sister, Laurie, to put in her classroom. It is a quote by Maya Angelou, that really speaks true for everyone, and I particularly think it's a great addition to a classroom. People often get caught up in perfection from the get-go of a new adventure or project or what-have-you, but it's really important to remember that perfection is unattainable. What you can do, however, is exactly what the quote explains--do your best, with time you'll learn and know better, then you can go out and do even better than before. I think this can ring true in terms of an everyday project for school, but it can also ring true on a deeper level. I for one like it because it teaches me that you just have to give everything your all until you can go out and do better for the world, for other people, and for you and your life. So thank you Laurie for asking me to do this. I'm really proud of how it turned out, and I enjoyed making this for someone who means a lot to me, who I know is a true advocate for just doing your best always.

And now, I'd like to start a new column on this blog. Every week--we'll go with every Saturday--I will post a new hand-lettered piece. It might be a quote of another, a thought of mine, perhaps just some random words, but it will all be personally hand-lettered by me. It won't necessarily always be turned into a digital file and colored like the one above, it might just be straight out of my sketchbook. This column will give me the opportunity to keep practicing and experimenting with hand lettering, which is something that I've really come to enjoy for quite some time now, both in doing and just in viewing others' works. So come back every Saturday for a new hand-lettered goodie! Maybe at some point I might even feature a download of one of the prints so you can print it out and hang it up somewhere for yourself!

The background of the print was created using this downloadable brush set from Creature Comforts! You can download them for free, so if you like that sort of thing, I suggest you check it out!

Edit: Just want to let you know that I have added this lettering to my society6 shop as art prints, tshirts, pillows, and more!

  1. Makin' me cry and stuff...

But seriously, you are so talented and I am so appreciative of the time you spent to create this for me. It'll look awesome on/near my desk...in the best spot to remind me every day to take a deep breath & do the very best I can do in that moment. I'm so glad that it is doing as much for you as it does for me.

    I love you!
